In 2022, the May Bank Holiday will be moved to Thursday 2nd June & an extra bank holiday will be provided for Friday 3rd June. This means a 4 day bank holiday from Thursday 2nd June until Sunday 5th June to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
Most people will automatically assume they will get an extra day off this year paid– but this is not necessarily the case.
The answer lies within your employment contract and the wording around leave and bank holidays.
If the contract specifies the 8 standard bank holidays then in the event of an additional bank holiday such as the Queen’s Jubilee bank holiday 2022, the employee would not be entitled to it. You may choose to allow the employee to take it off and be paid for it even though there is no contractual obligation to do so.
If it specifies that the employee is entitled to 28 days inclusive of bank/public holidays or 20 days plus BH’s then they would be entitled to take the Queen’s Jubilee BH 2022 off and be paid for it.
