Approximately 700 construction workers in the UK take their own lives each year

02 Apr 2024

That equates to at least two lives lost every single day.

This chilling statistic highlights the profound impact of mental health issues within the construction industry.

Several unique factors contribute to the high rates of suicide within this sector:

  • Male-dominated culture: Outdated beliefs surrounding masculinity discourage men from openly discussing mental health concerns, perpetuating stigma and hindering support.
  • Physical demands and hazardous environments: The strenuous nature of construction work adds to stress levels, exacerbating both physical and mental health challenges.
  • Long working hours: Extended shifts disrupt work-life balance and contribute to exhaustion, posing additional health risks.
  • Job insecurity and financial instability: Seasonal variations and market uncertainties create financial pressures, compounding personal stressors.

As business leaders, it is crucial to take proactive measures to address workplace stress and destigmatise mental health issues.

Here are three key areas for action:

  1. Increase awareness and education: Educating employees about mental health and recognising signs of burnout is vital for breaking down stigma and promoting early intervention.
  2. Implement regular check-ins: Establishing monthly meetings between managers and team members fosters engagement and provides opportunities for support.
  3. Promote work-life balance: Prioritise policies that support a healthy balance between work and personal life to reduce stress levels.

While implementing wellness resources such as Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs) may not be financially affordable for all businesses, there are also charities and free resources available in the UK:

  • Mind: Provides information on mental health conditions and support through their Infoline.
  • Samaritans: Offers confidential emotional support 24/7.
  • CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably): Focuses on preventing male suicide through helpline and webchat support.
  • Headspace: An app that offers guided meditation and mindfulness exercises.
  • Woebot: Is a free app that provides free assistance with stress, anxiety, and depression using CBT techniques.

Together, let’s prioritise workplace well-being and collectively address mental health challenges to prevent tragedies like suicide.
